It serves as a proposed explanation for observed phenomena based on existing knowledge and theoretical frameworks. Hypotheses guide the research process by providing clear, specific statements that can be empirically tested. They typically follow an "if-then" structure, suggesting that if certain conditions exist, then specific outcomes will follow. Next, she discussed the formulation of research questions and hypotheses, followed by designing an appropriate methodology after which the researcher then collects data through various techniques such as experiments, surveys, or observations.

She further stressed on the importance of selecting suitable research designs based on the nature of inquiry, whether quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods. She gave vivid details on data collection techniques, with discussions on the merits of surveys, interviews, experimental designs, and observational methods. WORKSHOP ON "DISSEMINATION OF AWARENESS ABOUT THE GST ACT"

On 25th February (Tuesday), the PG Department of Commerce and Management under the initiative of Department of Excise & Taxation (Government of Punjab), organized a one-day workshop on "Dissemination of awareness about the Goods and Services Tax Act" at 11:40 am in the Smart Room for the students of commerce. The objective of this event was to provide awareness about the Goods and Services Tax Act and its application.

Mr. Shalinder Singh, a dynamic professional, serving as Assistant Director (Investigation) cum-State Tax Officer in Punjab's Government. He holds a master’s degree in philosophy, Political Science, and English. A qualifier of UGC NET six times, renowned author and scholar. He has received the Young Scholars' award twice. He has served in excise and taxation departments across Ludhiana, Patiala, Bathinda, and Jalandhar, while also functioning as a GST master trainer and participating in state and national workshops.

Mr. Shalinder Singh initiated the session by offering a dual perspective on India's Goods and Services Tax (GST), examining both its theoretical foundations and practical implications. Structured as two technical sessions—"GST in Academics" and "GST in Real Life"—the presentation illuminated how this landmark tax reform has reshaped India's economic landscape since its implementation on July 1, 2017.

He highlighted GST's key features: a "One Nation One Tax" regime, consumption-based taxation, PAN-based structure, technology-driven implementation, and evolution from the previous VAT system. The constitutional framework established through the 101st Amendment Act of 2016 created Article 246A, granting concurrent powers to state and union governments, and Article 279A, which established the GST Council.

He also explained GST's four-component structure: IGST for interstate transactions, and CGST, SGST, and UTGST for intrastate transactions, with the latter three splitting the applicable tax rate between central and state or union territory administrations. The tax rates fall into multiple slabs (5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%, plus 3% for jewellery), while the Composition Scheme offers simplified compliance for small businesses at reduced rates (1% for manufacturers and traders, 5% for restaurant services not serving alcohol and 6% for marginal service providers.

He gave a detailed account of the technological infrastructure supporting GST implementation. The GST Portal, operated by Infosys, serves as the central platform for registration, returns, and payments, while the E-Way Bill system digitizes documentation requirements for goods transportation. The Workshop emphasized GST's realworld impact on daily life. He demonstrated how GST affects virtually everything we consume—from personal care products and clothing to transportation, entertainment, and digital services. He explained the consumer's relationship with composition taxpayers, who cannot collect GST despite paying it themselves.

He also addressed significant implementation challenges. These include tax avoidance by businesses remaining unregistered (below thresholds of ₹40 lakhs for goods and ₹20 lakhs for services) and deliberate evasion through fraudulent invoicing or undocumented supplies. He also stressed the counter measures that include the innovative "Mera Bill App." This encourages consumers to request proper invoices and enforcement through mobile. Many Special Investigation Units have recovered approximately ₹200 crore annually by use of this app.

At last, relevant questions were asked by students and staff, which were satisfactorily answered by the resource person. A total of 58 participants attended this Workshop, including students and faculty members of PG Department of Commerce and Management.

It was a knowledgeable session and a learning experience for students. The resource person effectively bridged theoretical understanding with practical insights by providing a valuable perspective on both the achievements and ongoing challenges of India's most significant tax reform in recent history.

The PG Department of Commerce & Management organized an industrial visit for the students of the department to Verka Milk Plant, Mohali, Chandigarh on 1st March 2025 (Saturday). The main aim of the visit was to provide a practical insight of the entire dairy process of milk and milk related products. Verka Milk Plant in Mohali, Punjab, is in the Industrial Area Phase 6, presently, The Ropar District Cooperative Milk Producer’s Union Limited. The students were taken on the tour of the production site into two groups. The information regarding the Product and its process right from raw material stage to finished goods stage was given by two trainers from Quality Control and Inspection Department.

The students were given detailed knowledge about the entire process from Milk Reception to Packaging, Distribution and Maintenance. The students were initially shown the refrigerated tankers which is used by Verka collects milk from local dairy farmers, farmer cooperatives, and village-level milk collection centres later, this collected milk is transported to the Verka processing plant in refrigerated tankers. Then the milk is weighed and measured at the measurement point.

The milk undergoes a quality test to ensure its quality, purity, and freedom from adulteration. This involves a series of tests, including the Milk Fat Test, which measures the fat content of the milk. Additionally, the Milk Protein Test is conducted to determine the protein content of the milk. The Milk SNF (Solids-Not-Fat) Test is also performed to measure the SNF content of the milk. Finally, the Milk Adulteration Test is carried out to detect any adulterants that may be present in the milk.

Then students were taken to the pasteurization unit, were practically shown how milk is pasteurized to kill bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms that may be present. This process involves heating the milk to a temperature of around 161 F (72 C) for at least 15 seconds. After pasteurization, the milk is standardized to adjust its fat content and other parameters to meet the required standards. This is achieved by separating the cream from the milk to adjust the fat content. Then milk is further distributed into various units wherever required by use of pipelines.

Subsequently, the students proceeded to the packaging site, where they witnessed the culmination of the Automated Milk Processing Plant. Through an intricate network of pipelines, the finished and processed milk reached an automated machine, which efficiently dispensed the filled milk packets. Notably, the machine had a meticulously labelled milk packet roll, with pertinent product information, pricing details, and prominent branding, thereby ensuring a professional and visually appealing presentation.

Finally, the packaged milk is distributed to retailers, wholesalers, and institutional customers through a network of distributors and logistics partners. To maintain its quality and safety, the milk is stored and transported in refrigerated conditions throughout the distribution process.

At last, the students visited the fermentation unit, Mrs. Harvinder, Quality Inspector of Fermentation, detailed about fermentation process of curd making. She explained that milk is first prepared by standardizing its fat content and temperature. Next, a starter culture is added to the milk to initiate the fermentation process. Then packed and sealed into tetra containers which are further packed into cartons. The milk is then incubated at a controlled temperature of 43 C for adequate hours, allowing the starter culture to grow and ferment the lactose. During the fermentation process, the lactose is converted into lactic acid, which gives the product its characteristic flavour and texture.

During the field visit a total of 57 students visited the plant- divided into two groups of 27 and 30 students. Five teachers accompanied them to the entire visit, from Milk Reception to packaging Distribution and maintenance. Verka Milk Plant Mohali is a front-line Milk Plant in Co-operative Sector having installed handling capacity of 5,00,000 litres of Milk per day.
