On 23rd April, 2024, the PG Department of
Commerce and Management of PCM SD College for Women, Jalandhar conducted
Felicitation Ceremony of the Commerce Club. Dr. Mrs. Pooja Prashar, Principal,
graced the occasion and presented trophies to the students for their hard work
and year around service to the Commerce Department. 57 Students, in total, were
awarded with trophies and certificates. The students who participated and
brought laurels to the Department in various Inter College Competitions were
also felicitated. Speaking on the occasion, madam Principal encouraged the
students to always remember the values they have in grained at college which
will help them etch a life embellished with success. Exhorting the students to
carry on with their pursuit of excellence, Head of Department, Mrs. Alka
Sharma, congratulated the members of Commerce Club. Overall, the ceremony was
enjoyable and motivating experience for the students.

Powerpoint Presentation Competition to commemorate The Central Excise Day (24 February)
On
22nd February, 2024 (Thursday)
the PG Department of Commerce and Management of PCM SD College for Women,
Jalandhar organized a Powerpoint Presentation Competition to commemorate the “Central
Excise Day” which is celebrated on 24th February every year by
Central Board of Indirect Taxes & Customs to honor the services of officers
of CBIC.
Central Excise Day is celebrated
annually to aware people about the hard work and commitment of CBIC. The main
function of CBIC is to keep a check on the corruption of goods from the
manufacturing industries. The CBIC officers play a critical role in the
country's industrial development. Every Indian citizen must pay taxes to
contribute in the country's economic progress.
The Power Point
Presentation Competition was organized to increase awareness amongst the
students about Indirect Taxes and Indian Taxation System. The students of B.
Com Sem- IVth gave power point presentations on various topics of
Goods & Services Taxes.

Presentation topics were - GST Council by Palak, GST & Its Components by
Sanjana, Composition Scheme by Chahat, Constitutional Amendments by Palak,
Features of GST by Sneha, Overview of GST – Law & Procedures by Vaishnavi.
The winners were appreciated and were given prizes for their commendable
performance.
32 students of PG
Department of Commerce and Management actively participated in this event. It
was an innovative approach to educate the students regarding the various
aspects of Indirect Taxes/Goods and Services Taxes in India.

Evaluative Study of Performance Appraisal Methods adopted in corporate sector On 18th April 2024
PG Department of Commerce & Management, in
accordance with the NEP 2020, organised an activity for B. Com FS Sem IV And M.
Com Sem II in order to bridge up the industry – academia gap. The activity was
an evaluative study of performance appraisal methods which are formally adopted
by HR managers as an evaluative tool and is also being taught as course
curriculum viz., Human Resource Management.
The students discussed in detail about the methods of
performance appraisal adopted in corporate sector with special reference to-
Google, Adobe, Tata Motors, Apple etc. The activity was organized to update the
students with recent and latest methods used in the corporate entities for
analysing the performance of the personnel of the leading entities and what are
implications of using such methods.
It served as a learning and knowledgeable experience
for the students and they got well versed about how organizations can retain
and attract the best talent to their advantage. The
activity was organized by Mrs. Shikha Puri, Dean, Commerce Club for in
depth discussion and deep insights of the prevalent human resource management
methods.

International Seminar On “Paradigm Shift in the role of a Professional Chartered Accountant to an Entrepreneur”
The PG Department of Commerce
and Management organized an international seminar on “Paradigm Shift in the
role of a Professional Chartered Accountant to an Entrepreneur” on 26th
April, 2024 (Friday). The resource person for the Seminar was Mrs. Namita
Malhotra CA (India) and CPA (Australia), currently working as accounts officer,
ALLG, Australia. The objective of this event was to provide the essentials of
Chartered Accountant as a profession & as an entrepreneur. The seminar was
conducted via Google Meet.
Dr. Mrs. Kuljeet Kaur, Assistant Professor, PG Department of Commerce & Management, introduced the eminent speaker and welcomed her. The honourable speaker initiated the seminar by discussing the curriculum of Chartered Accountant Examination as conducted by ICAI. She further deliberated that there is a paradigm shift in the role of a professional chartered accountant to an entrepreneur.
She first explained as a professional
a CA is in charge of financial accounting and reporting, Management accounting
- which is providing management reports viz Balance Sheet, Profit & Loss
A/c, Cash flows etc. and involves roles in areas of audit, insurance,
taxation-direct and indirect, economic planning, capital formation and finance.
She also mentioned that Budgeting-Financial budget, Cash flows and Fund flows,
Management Accounting, Preparing Management information system, designing the
budget, installation of cost accounting system are also parts of CA ‘s
professional career.
Further, CA as an entrepreneur was
discussed stating that a CA is the one who understands every detail of the business
and has great wisdom for better financial decisions. As per her when a CA is
the one who is running the business the financial decisions will the best and
beyond perfection because of Managing Cash flows as CA is the best at the
optimal utilization of the cash and maintaining a Balance Sheet as it provides
a snapshot of a company's financial health at a particular point in time. She
also cited examples of Kumar Mangalam Birla, Rakesh Jhunjhunwala and Motilal
Oswal who proved to be the game changers in this profession and were successful
entrpreneurs.
She also added when a CA is the
entrepreneur, can do an ongoing analysis to check which direction is the business
heading and can immediately take appropriate measures and stays up to date and
compliant with Govt. Regulations.
She concluded by CA as an
Entrepreneur is a complete win-win situation and when we start something of our
own, we are true partners in the Nation building. Why to work for someone
else when one can work for one’s own self, a CA as an entrepreneur is the best
thing to happen because he/she knows all the finance tricks that makes a
business successful.
Valid questions were raised by the
students, and they were satisfactorily answered by the resource person. The
vote of thanks was presented by Mrs. Alka Sharma, Head, PG Department of
Commerce & Management. A total of 82 participants attended this Seminar,
including students and faculty members of the various departments of the
college. It was a knowledgeable session that gave guidance and deep insights
about the paradigm shift in the role of a professional chartered accountant to
an entrepreneur.

Role Play on Consumer Protection Act 2019 On 20th April 2024
The PG Department of Commerce and Management organized a role play for B.Com. FS Sem. II and B.Com. Sem. II. The role play on the Consumer Protection Act 2019, which is a part of their subject commercial law and mercantile law, The students played the roles of judge, lawyer, plaintiff, and witness. The role play was on the leading case of Taj Mahal Hotel vs. Mr. Sapnan Dhawan and United Insurance Company.
The students showcased their talent and
conceptual clarity by enacting the entire case and judgment. The students
acting as lawyers also gave valid arguments in relation to sections and
provisions of the act. Namely, deficiency of services as under Section 35 of
the Consumer Protection Act 2019, gratuitous services are still
complimentary as under Section 148, Section 149 of the Indian Contract Act
1872, establishes a bailment contract between the hotel authorities and Mr.
Dhawan as the car keys were in the possession of hotel staff, and the hotel's
negligence on the part of a bailee, which violates Section 151 and is
punishable according to Section 152 of the Indian Contract Act 1872, were the
cause of concern.
The activity was organized by Ms. Diksha Bakshi,
Assistant Professor, PG Department of Commerce & Management, to give
students deep insights into the application of provisions of the Consumer
Protection Act 2019. Mrs. Alka Sharma, head,
PG Department of Commerce and Management, congratulated the students on their
wonderful presentation. The faculty members of the PG Department of Commerce
and Management were also present.

International Webinar on ‘Fundamentals of New Research Methods’
The PG Department of Commerce and Management
organized an international webinar on “Fundamentals of New Research Methods” on
17th April, 2024 (Wednesday). The resource person for the webinar
was Dr. (CMA) Nandita Mishra, Associate Professor, Linköping University,
Sweden, Ambassador, IIRC, London, and Country Director of HETL (USA). The
objective of this event was to provide the essentials of new research methods.
The webinar was conducted via Google Meet.
Mrs. Shikha Puri, Dean, Commerce Club, introduced
the eminent speaker and welcomed her. The honourable speaker explained the
concept of the research design and then deliberated on research methods, viz.,
quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods. Further, she explained inductive,
deductive, and abductive reasoning for research. She brought to light that
there are three main aspects of good research: exploration, rationalization,
and validation, for which inductive, deductive, abductive, and mix research
methods are to be used. She focused on abductive research through examples
and highlighted the difference between the usage of such research. Her emphasis
was more on qualitative research, or a combination of qualitative and
quantitative research, as it serves as a better platform for exploratory
research.
She also discussed the research design and the
procedure to choose it in alignment with one’s research. A complete knowledge
of the difference between quantitative and qualitative research methods was
given. The details of the research strategies, including the aspects involved
in the problem and the verdict of the research, were cause for concern. She
concluded by saying that mixing design and qualitative or quantitative methods,
or a mix of different computational methods, proved to be a game changer.
She gave vivid details about mixed methods of
research, which include procedures that feature combinations of different
methods in either sequential or concurrent fashion, the mixing of quantitative
and qualitative strategies (think of these procedures as having a focus on "numbers
and words"), and also the mixing of design and qualitative/quantitative
methods, or the mixing of different computational methods.
Valid questions were raised by the students, and
they were satisfactorily answered by the resource person. The vote of thanks
was presented by Mrs. Alka Sharma, Head, PG Department of Commerce &
Management. A total of 75 participants attended this webinar, including
students and faculty members of the Commerce and Management department. It was
a knowledgeable session that gave guidance and deep insights about the new
research methods.

Workshop On Tally Prime
The PG Department of Commerce and Management
organized a workshop on ‘Tally Prime’ on 10th February 2024
(Saturday) in the computer lab of IT Block. The resource persons for the
workshop were Mr. GS Multani, Col. (retired), presently Director, ICA Edu
Skills Pvt Ltd., Jalandhar, and Ms. Ritika Verma, MBA (Finance, Marketing, and
UGC-NET) from ICA Edu Skills Pvt Ltd., Jalandhar. The objective of this event
was to give students hands-on experience in relation to Tally Prime.
Mrs. Shikha Puri, Dean, Commerce Club, introduced
the eminent speakers and welcomed them. The resource person initiated and
explained that tally prime is a one-stop business management software that
caters to all the business requirements, from accounting and invoicing to
inventory management, insightful business reports, and cash flow management,
thereby improving business efficiency.
Exciting features of Tally Prime like -
Simplified Interface, Insightful Business Reports, Invoicing and Accounting,
GST/taxation, inventory management, cash flow management, Multitasking
Capabilities, go-to feature, accessing business data online, and secured data
were also vividly explained.
A complete knowledge of the workings of Tally
Prime software was given via three case studies (problem sheets). Which were
solved by students using the shortcut keys as given by the resource persons.
The queries were raised simultaneously by the students and satisfactorily addressed
by the resource persons.
Mrs. Shikha Puri, presented a vote of thanks. A
total of 40 students of B.Com. and B.Com. (FS)-IInd Semester and
faculty members attended this workshop. It was a knowledgeable session that
served as an opportunity for students to be updated on the new concepts of
Tally Prime.

4 Days Workshop on Hands On Training: Advance Ms -Excel
The PG Department of Computer Science and IT and
the PG Department of Commerce and Management organized a workshop on Hands-on
Training: Advance MS Excel in association with O7 Solutions (IT Company) from 2nd
April 2024 (Tuesday) to 5th April 2024 (Saturday) in the
Computer Lab of IT Block. The resource persons for the workshop were Ms.
Shivani, and Ms. Diksha, faculty members of O7 Solutions (IT Company). The
objective of this event was to give students hands-on experience in relation to
Advance Ms -Excel.
Dr. Mrs. Lovey Sharma, assistant professor in the
PG Department of Computer Science and IT, introduced the eminent speakers and
welcomed them. The students were divided into two groups, and each group was
allocated different labs with one resource person. On first day, the basics of
MS Excel were discussed, like: What are a workbook and a worksheet, Operations
like: Copy, paste, move, find, replace, navigate, insert, and remove
hyperlinks; change worksheet tab color; insert and delete rows and columns
adjust rows and column heights; How to change the theme, insert a header and
footer, and hide and unhide worksheet cells Modify document properties. A
detailed description of formulas was also given, including formulas for some
min and max and a value count, average, if function, sum if, upper, lower,
right, left, and middle.
On the second day, students were explained about
managing a workbook, encrypt shut, protecting it with a password, formatting,
creating a specific list, custom conditional formatting, managing conditional
formatting inspection, how to create a table and change its design and style,
and how to sort, remove, and duplicate it.
On the third day, charts and multiple chart
creation, labeling of charts by inserting text, moving charts, pivot tables,
and pivot charts were discussed in detail. Formulas of count if, sum if,
average if, V lookup, H lookup, date and time, and, or, not, etc. were also
discussed.
On the last and fourth day of this workshop, the
students were given details about financial functions: payment function,
interest payment function, principal payment function, data validation,
troubleshooting feature, scenario management, macros, and to change currency in
Excel.For all four days, the resource persons delivered the lecture for two
hours, followed by a practice session of one hour, during which the students
got hands-on experience and time to solve their doubts on a real-time basis,
and the resource persons guided the students and solved the valid queries.
Dr. Mrs. Lovey Sharma presented a vote of thanks
on the fourth and last day. A total of 84 students from B. Com Sem IV, B. Com
(FS) Sem IV, B. Com Sem VI, M. Com Sem II, and M. Com Sem IV attended this
workshop. It was a knowledgeable session that served as an opportunity for
students to be updated on the new concepts of Advance MS Excel.

The session started with a lamp-lighting ceremony.
The resource person introduced the topic by giving details regarding digital
transformation, and he highlighted that there are three stages of digital
transformation, i.e. first - Digitization – “fixing the past”, second -
Digitalization “focusing on the present,” and lastly – Digital Transformation –
“creating the future." Further, he highlighted how India has to evolve and
transform itself digitally and create future job avenues for the upcoming
youth. He said that India still has to gather more peace and momentum to accomplish
the goal of digital transformation, as the level of digitalization will affect
employment. He shared the research by the ITU International Telecommunication
Union, UN Agency and discussed the readiness of digital transformation in
emerging economies, in which India is showing moderate possibilities. He
highlighted that good governance and collaborative governance are the two main
essentials for the digital transformation of India, which will further improve
the entrepreneurship level in India. He said India, being a member of the ASEAN
Region, stands out as one of the advanced regions, achieving an overall unified
framework score of 57% vs. South Asia's 43%. Discussing the World Bank Group
global digital economy framework, he explained emerging digital opportunities
and challenges. We’ll provide new dimensions for the digital economy, which
include digital infrastructure, digital public platforms, digital financial
services, digital businesses, digital skills, and a trust environment. This
will ensure a better platform and ecosystem for entrepreneurship. He also
discussed the entrepreneurship skills that are much needed by youth in the
current digital era. Further, he added that digital transformation is a key
process that will boost entrepreneurship by not only enhancing digital
employability but also physical employability.
